Cam Detecting

This method of detecting bites was very popular during 1989 to 1996 and still has some advantages over the more conventional wheel.

It was mainly invented to overcome a Patent which was stopping other manufacturers producing bite alarms, but proved to be a great success.

The design consisted of a swinging lever resting against a cam wheel, as the fishing line moved the cam the arm would move back and forwards.

At the bottom of the swinging arm a paddle was used to interrupt an infra red light source which was used to trigger the electronics in producing an indication of a bite.

GOOD POINTS

  1. Very sensitive bite detection, would even detect twitch bites.
  2. Would stop indicating immediately the fish stopped running with the bait, (some wheel indicating systems continue to spin after the line stops moving).

BAD POINTS

  1. Because of the design constraints it was difficult to use a stylish case.
  2. The unit could only be used in an upright position.
  3. In strong windy conditions it could indicate a false bite if it was not set up correctly.
